| Other Lot Structures | Jonathan Prince Pollard House (1797 - 1822) |
The Capt. William Richardson House at 409 Boston Road stands just south of the Common, on the site of the Jonathan Prince Pollard House. The lot has been a house lot since at least 1725, when Ebenezer Dows sold two acres "near the Center of the Town ... with all the Buildings" to James Barrett, a tanner; it passed to Jonathan Brown (1729) and William Marshall (1732), who in December 1735 divided it. The north acre, "with a House and Barn thereon standing", bounded east by the County Road sixteen poles and south by Edward Jewett (the Nathaniel Davidson House lot), went for 200 pounds to Jeremiah Abbot, a saddler, who sold it in 1748 to the Rev. John Chandler, the town's third minister. Chandler lived here until his death in 1762. In 1785 one of his daughters sold her half to William White of Boston, who sold the old homestead in 1797 to the housewright Reuben Duren; Duren sold "my dwelling house and shop" with three quarters of an acre to Jonathan P. Pollard that December.
Pollard sold the place in 1807 to Joseph Lord Low, and in March 1822 Low sold the acre "with the buildings thereon" for $700 to Francis Richardson, whose land already bounded it on the north: in 1814 his brother, Capt. William Richardson, had sold him the half-acre corner lot on the Common for $2,000. The present house dates from that year. "1822" is written in the mortar inside the foundation, and second-floor beams uncovered in 1973 carry a chalk note about wide boards for "Capt. Wm. R." The house was built with a store wing on the north side, removed about 1920, and several first-floor rooms, with two more upstairs, were painted with wall murals attributed to Rufus Porter.
The deeds show, though, that the captain never held title to this lot. William Richardson, stage proprietor, tavern keeper and trader, married in May 1822 and died in June 1826. His probate lists "The Centre Tavern, so called" with two acres, a house near the Corner Bridge, "The Centre Store, so called" with a third of an acre, meadow and wood lots, pews and "a lease of the farm where the deceased last dwelt", and his debts of more than $20,000 made the estate insolvent. The house lot belonged to Francis, who had mortgaged it with the corner lot to their brother Asa Richardson, a Boston merchant, in 1824 and released it to him in 1826. The chalk note suggests William had a hand in building the house on his brother's land, but it was not part of his estate.
In 1827 Asa sold the house lot, 82 square poles "with all the buildings thereon", to Susan Tarr of Boston. It then belonged to Martha Goodridge (1831), George Holbrook (1832) and Emily Holbrook (1833) as "the Holbrook place", until the captain's nephew Francis E. Richardson bought it back in 1848. He kept the store and the post office here for half a century, borrowing on the house again and again, and after the foreclosure of his last mortgage in 1904 it passed through Joshua B. Holden to Charles C. Johnson (1905), Harry E. Holdridge (1911) and the family of Albert C. Lane of Woburn (1914-1925), and then to Ernest N. and Hattie E. Bartlett in 1925. Bartlett, later the town's fire chief, lived next to the Center Fire Station and had the lot surveyed in 1928 (Plan Book 55, Plan 89: 22,100 square feet).
The Bartletts sold the house in July 1946 to James and Beatrice B. Sweet, taking back a $5,500 mortgage, and lent them another $4,000 in 1950. In December 1955 the Sweets sold it to private owners, and on the same day Ernest N. Bartlett, as executor of his wife's will, discharged the mortgage. The 1955 owners sold it in 1976 for $40,000 to the Billerica Center Trust, and after transfers between trusts in 1982 and 1983 it went in 1986 to Billerica Center Realty, Inc., which had its office here. It was sold in 2016, taken briefly by the Town for unpaid taxes in 2019 and redeemed, and sold in 2023 for $1,000,000 to Design Billerica LLC, which received a mixed-use special permit from the Planning Board in 2026 to convert the building, then a two-family house, to a shop on the ground floor with apartments above. The assessor lists it on 0.507 acres with a construction date of "about 1800". The house is in the Billerica Center local historic district (1990).

William Richardson, husband of Joseph Danforth's daughter Sally (Sarah), died in June 1826; his widow declined administration and Marshall Preston was appointed June 27, 1826. The inventory (Joseph Blanchard, Josiah Stevens, Ichabod Everett) shows a stage and livery business: ten horses, four stage harnesses, an old stage coach, a covered wagon, a blacksmith shop and a hop house. Debts of more than $20,000 made the estate insolvent, and on Feb. 13, 1827 the administrator was licensed to sell the real estate. The widow's dower (return of April 3, 1827) was a fifteen-acre lot east of the Shawshin and a pew; no dwelling house is named, since the family lived on Danforth land.
